I use Adobe Lightroom as my primary image management software on both the PC and Macintosh. One of my persistent frustrations has been the “creeping slowness” issue, especially on an extended shoot. For instance, on day one of my trip to Africa last year, my catalog had about 8000 images and was nice and speedy. [...]

Check out this 360 degree panorama on a clear day from near the top of El Yunque National Rainforest, Puerto Rico. The day I went up there, there were no clouds and no rain, resulting in a view that apparently is very rare to enjoy. Altogether, I ended up with a 116 megapixel image, stitched [...]

There is a great plaza in the northwest section of San Juan where skateboarders gather each afternoon to practice challenge each other to perform tricks. On my daily walks through the old part of the city, I made it a point to stop by each day and see if there were any shots to grab.

For some reason, this photo sucks.
It seemed so intruging when I took it — deep vignetting and narrow depth of field due to f/1.4, rain, atmospheric colors, and geometric unity among the horizontal lines.
A little bit of editing to amplify these attributes, and now, crap.
Can someone smarter and more artistic than I am help explain [...]

Both are great products, but which one is better? This question comes across my desk every so often, so I figured I’d take the time to give this topic some serious treatment.
